Hurricane Felix made history as the second Category 5 storm to reach the Caribbean coast this year, after Hurricane Dean. It has been reported that never before have two Category 5 Atlantic storms struck landfall in the same year, experts say.
Hurricane Felix struck land as Hurricane Henriette headed for the southern tip of Baja California in Mexico. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said its records taking back half a century show no other twin Atlantic and Pacific hurricanes making landfall on the same day.
Felix’s winds ripped off corrugated steel roofs, demolished wooden homes and two fishing boats with 45 people aboard remained lost at sea after issuing distress calls at the height of the storm, the authorities told La Prensa. The airport control tower collapsed in Puerto Cabezas, José Pérez, head of the national disaster agency, told Agence France-Presse.
